Hello and happy Fall!

Yesterday we officially began Fall.

The leaves have been showing us their beautiful colors already. The air is crisp and we've even built some fires in the wood stove. *Aaaahhh* So nice.

A great way to celebrate the equinox yesterday was the Lunch Wraps Workshop at the Hunger Mountain Coop. We had fun and everyone samples 3 types of wrap sandwich spreads. How fun to be able to celebrate the local harvest and make delicious LIVE sandwiches to boot. Thank you for coming to these workshops with your enthusiastic and hungry selves. It's great to be able to play with and talk about food with you.

So the other day, Pat - my friend, neighbor and photographer said she wanted to take a walk. And do you know what she wanted to have join her on her excursion? My food. She wanted to take new pictures of them. I'll post more up on the website but here is a small sampling:

I call this one "Hempy Trails"

isn't that beautiful?
and the scenery isn't bad either! hahaha :-)

This one I call "Heavenly Chocolate Butters"

God Butter & Goddess Butter - YUM YUM!
I have a new label - have you noticed?

I call this one "Ta-DAAAA!!"

This is Pat having fun on the Worcester Mountain Range - careful Pat!

Thanks Pat! I always love the way you photograph stuff.

Some interesting stuff to read (and hopefully you can take some RAW action!):

  • My friend Arlen sent this to me in response to the last recipe I sent which had listed an alternative to agave. He was wondering why I gave an optional substitution of honey. The reason is that honey is local and local is important to Vermonters and it is important to me. Also, if I don't write substitutions, I inevitably get questions about it - questions like "What if I don't have agave, can I use honey instead?" Yes, use honey, use stevia, use dates... use what you have and feel comfortable using. I don't believe that honey is vegan though - it is an animal product so if you are a vegan who really follows the "rules" of veganism, then there is little to debate about honey. For me, the last sentence of this interesting article is where I'm coming from: http://www.slate.com/id/2196205/- You know, I almost put "Maple Syrup" as another alternative in the last recipe post. But each time I do stuff like that, I will get some comment about it not being raw. Even if I write, "not raw" next to a not raw ingredient, someone feels they have to tell me that they'd never use it because it's not raw. To each his own.

  • My friend Amy sent this to me. It's a short video clip (news clip) of a small business owner (body care products) who opposes the FDA Globalization Act of 2008. Here's the article and video clip: http://tinyurl.com/44yr3a and another link which gives information on the subject and a petition to sign: http://www.indiebusinessblog.com/indie_business/

  • And a good web post about lead called: "Lead: Celebrate its ban, but don't cross it off your list" - I love that people are doing things to make small improvements in our world, don't you?

  • Interesting interviews on the proposed bailout including one from our very own Bernie Sanders: you can read the transcript or download the video/audio files

  • And finally, some links on plastics and BPA: http://reusablebags.typepad.com/

If you'd like to contact your Congressional reps or Senators to weigh in on this or any subject, here's the links: http://www.house.gov, http://www.senate.gov

And now for that recipe

Chocolate Hemp Milkshake
http://www.goneraw.com/

Trying to go along with the whole hemp theme. I got this recipe from goneraw and I reworded it a bit...

"Makes a big, tall glass of happiness. Easy and excellent way to wake up in the morningkeeps you going all day long."

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Water or your favorite nut milk
  • 3 Medjool Dates
  • 3 tablespoons Hemp seeds
  • 2 tablespoons Raw Cacao nibs
  • 1 pinch Celtic Sea Salt
  • 1 Banana
  • Ice
Preparation

Soak the medjool dates in 1 cup of water for 10-20 minutes. Add the dates and the soak water to your blender along with hemp, cacao and salt. Blend on high until smooth. You may want to grind cacao beforehand if you don't have a high powered blender makes a smoother drink. Throw the banana in (frozen is better) and some ice and blend again until thick like a milkshake. You will be tempted, but don't drink too fast brain freeze.

Linda's note: medjool dates are usually quite soft so you really don't need to soak them if you don't want to

OK, I'm outta here. Enjoy your week and start adding some raw food to replace something less-than-stellar in your diet today!

Hearts and hugs,
Linda

P.S. Need some bulk food items? Well, send me an email or check out what I have on my products page! I have more than what is listed. My friend told me I'm like a chinese market here. COOL! I love it! I'll add more to the site. I just need to find another me to do some work so I can do other stuff... :-D
