Well hello there Good People!

So much going on as usual. Wanted to let you know that I just delivered to the stores, so go to your local healthy food store or coop and enjoy some raw food!

We're nearing the end of the chilli and zucchini hummus as we head towards fall. I'll have a couple more deliveries of those two items but I likes to keep my ingredients local - particularly with tomatoes. I'm a tomato snob, ok - I admit it. SO check out Hunger Mountain Coop, Sweet Clover Market and Healthy Living for some kickass raw tr-eats. I heard back from a woman in Florida telling me that she's loving my food and has been telling people about it. That's cool. Keep the feedback coming! (Hunger Mtn is going to be updating their refrigerated section soon so there will be a lag in deliveries there. So get the grab and go items while the gettin's good!) :-)

My personal favorite? Well, I love love love the chickUN salad with my ginger crackers. It hits all the flavors and my mouth dances as I eat it. But how can I say that I love only the chickUN salad when the zucchini hummus is so yummy. I had some for a snack today (also with the crackers.) The texture is probably what I love the most about the zucchini hummus. And then there is the chilli. OH MAN, THE CHILLI is gooooooooooood. One friend of ours joked that he won't come over for dinner unless I'm serving the chilli. My son has seconds of chilli each time he eats it. And the NOT Tuna is good too. REALLY good. It's both my kids' favorites. They eat it with fresh VT bread. No, my kids are not 100% raw and I don't want them to be - I do however want them eating a lot of raw food each day. The Hazelnut Spice Cookies are hella good. I've been blending them up more and adding a touch more agave so they are a little bit sweeter than before. I can't help it. I love all the stuff. Yum on the fudge. I'll be doing an almond fudge very soon. The god and goddess butters are also exTREMEly good. My friend just came back from the Tunbridge fair - she said she tried a maple cream donut and she wrote and said, "The maple cream was WICKED good...but not as good as the goddess butter!" Yea baby. Thanks for the props!

ok, so onto the local raw news
  • We have an opportunity to host some big names in the raw food world as they make their circuit around New England. Can you email me back and tell me if you'd be interested in seeing them come to the Montpelier or Burlington area? Can you tell me if your group would be interested in co-sponsoring the event? It's a goal of a lot of here to have more raw food awareness come to VT and a great way to do it would be to have people like Victoria Boutenko and David Wolfe come to our neck of the woods. Let me know if you can help organize. Thanks!
  • REMINDER: Lunch Wraps Workshop is at Hunger Mountain Coop next Monday, September 22nd from 6:30 - 7:30. Come learn some lunch ideas that are easy as raw pie to make and more delicious than you can imagine.
  • We've got a fun new product for sale. Have you taken a look at it? It's our reusable hemp tea bags. They are so RAWsome! I do drink tea. ANOTHER MYTH BUSTED! hahaha I love tea, sun tea as well as from my teapot. I don't prescribe to very "purist" ideals on any side of the fence. I love these hemp tea bags - I asked Matt to make them (I drew him a picture of what I wanted) and asked if he could make them from what remained of making the hemp nut milk bags and I'm very happy that we have them.

The calendar page is here

And here's some interesting news and things for you to read about:

  • There's an update in the almond pasteurization news! Almond Growers Sue the USDA - Here's the AP article: http://ap.google.com/article/ and another site that has a couple links for more information: http://eatdrinkbetter.com/2008/09/12/ - and here is MIke Adam's article on it: http://www.naturalnews.com/024132.html The AP article states "The Almond Board concluded that pasteurization didn't affect the quality of the almonds, but consumers interested in untreated food have been steering clear, and customer feedback has been extremely negative, the lawsuits' plaintiffs say." Have you tried the raw pasteurized almonds? They taste different to me and they are feeble in color and quality. Stores can carry the raw sprouted almonds and those have still been pasteurized. My understanding is organic almonds can only be steamed pasteurized and "conventionally grown" almonds can be fumigated, irradiated or some other means of pasteurization. Some of these methods involve potentially carcinogenic chemicals for pasteurziation. Ee-gads. You know, we take all this chemical stuff aside, this ordeal is seeming to push out the small organic farmer. What do we want to support here? I'm happy to get my really raw almonds from Spain but I used to get it from California. I'd rather "go American" if I can't go really local like my own backyard...
  • Who owns your favorite organic brand: I've included this in the past but it's always good to keep this information circulating: http://ecochildsplay.com/2008/02/10/ - there's a pdf download with an enlightening chart. Moral of the story: Buy local! Make your own! Stopped buying and eating processed food - even if it's organic, check out the label dudes! (My public service announcement for the day.) :-)

Here's that recipe for the week

Back to school time means it's back to packing snacks time! Here is one recipe you can make as well as another yummy and easy tip below.

Apple Snack Treats

Use and ice cream scoop for making these uniform.

Ingredients

  • 3 medium apples, grated (it's apple season!)
  • 1 cup ground flax or hemp seeds
  • 1 cup almond pulp from making nut milk (using our handy dandy nut milk bags)
  • cup raw agave (use honey if you don't have agave)
  • cup unsweetened coconut flakes
  • cup currants, raisins or other dried fruit
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • optional additions: chopped walnuts, soaked/sprouted sunflower seeds

In a dry VitaMix pitcher, grind the flax or hemp seeds into meal. Put in a bowl. Add the grated apples, almond pulp and the other ingredients and mix well with your hands or with a spoon. This is a fun recipe to do with your kids. Using a small ice cream scooper, scoop out and place on teflex sheets or parchment paper. Dehydrate overnight or to your preferred taste. It's quite possible to make this recipe and not have it be dehydrated - just adjust the wet/dry ingredients accordingly so it's not ultra wet - It won't be even if you adhere to the recipe. Store in the refrigerator if not dehydrated. Your kids will love this. Have them add whatever they want and nix the ingredients that they don't like. HINT: make these into bars if you don't want to scoop them into ball shapes. This also works as a yummy breakfast cereal!

Date Snack Treats

This is so simple and fast. This is a favorite here. I got this from my dad and I changed it a bit (I use even less ingredients than he does!) :-)

Ingredients

  • medjool dates (as many as you wish - we usually do 2 per person)
  • nut butter (your favorite)

Pit the dates and fill them with a little bit of nut butter - close them up and enjoy. They are so delicious and a perfect snack for your kid's lunchbox.

OK, I'm outta here. Enjoy your week and start adding some raw food to replace something less-than-stellar in your diet today!

Hearts and hugs,
Linda

P.S. Need some bulk food items? Well, send me an email or check out what I have on my products page! I have more than what is listed. My friend told me I'm like a chinese market here. COOL! I love it! I'll add more to the site. I just need to find another me to do some work so I can do other stuff... :-D
