Well hello there Good People!

I've been busy with summer activities, although it's been a whacky summer here as far as weather is concerned. There's lots of stuff going on so I'll get right to it.

So here's the latest and greatest
  • Food deliveries continue for Sweet Clover MarketCity MarketHealthy Living and Hunger Mountain Coop. Please support your local coops and markets. Our food is located in the "grab and go" sections which means the place where you get pre-made items.

  • Tuesday night August 19th at Hunger Mountain Coop is the "Pea Shoots, Pea Sprouts and Raw Goddess Dressing" workshop from 6:00 - 7:30. Peter Burke and I are joining efforts and having fun to boot! This is the 2nd of two workshops and we hope to do more in the coming months. We want to show you how easy and economical it is to do your own sprouting/indoor gardening AND I'll show you an easy and delicious dressing. There's still some room if you want to come! Don't miss this! It's getting more and more important to be able to grow your own greens anywhere! (We've been having unbelievable rain this "summer".)

  • Saturday, August 23rd from 11 am until 5 pm, I'm going to have a table at the Sustainability Fair that Healthy Living is putting together. Looks like they are having $1000 gift card giveaway. That's cool! Come see me and try some of my food. I'll be making some lovely nut milk to go along with some food samples. YUM! Here is more information on the weekend's events: great-grocery-giveaway

  • Monday night September 22nd at Hunger Mountain Coop is the "Lunch Wraps" workshop from 6:30 - 7:30. I'm SO excited for this workshop. I've been making some great lunch wraps and I can't wait to show you and have you taste them. SO delicious. These things are portable and delectable. They are perfect for bringing with you to work. They are simple to make and won't break the budget.

OTHER HAPS THAT ARE HAPPENING IN THE GREATER RAW COMMUNITY

  • If you are going to be in the MA area Aug 19th and 20th, please check this out. This is so important! I want to see about showing this here in Central VT as well. Deborah Koons Garcia will be at 2 locations on Tuesday and Wednesday to talk about her documentary: The Future of Food. She'll be speaking on Food and Integrity and introducing her latest film. For more info: here - This comes to you from the RNEC and I've just been asked to be the VT representative. I totally am inspired by all that Joe, Betsy and the gang are doing in Mass and hope it can wind around these parts as well...

Here's some stuff for your study time/research

  • This is so cool! I love the internet. Here's a site called "Rethinking School Lunch" - The Rethinking School Lunch (RSL) program uses a systems approach to address the crisis in childhood obesity, provide nutrition education, and teach ecological knowledge. How perfect as we gear up to getting back to school...

  • June's newsletter is out for the Organic Seed Alliance (this ties in very nicely with what Deborah Koons Garcia's work... seedalliance.org

  • Union of Concerned Scientists has lots of good info. Here is some on sustainable food: ucsusa.org - and they spotlight some pretty good things in their newsletters. Here is one on local growers supplying to local restaurants

  • Learn to eat good food within your budget! Get this e-book which is available for download. Here's the link to that as well:  Raw Food Made Economical eBook

Here's that recipe for the week

Green Smoothies

Wanted to send out another green smoothie recipe or two. These things are so versatile and yummy. You can even get your kids to drink them! I'm serious!

Green Goodness (this comes to you from the book Fresh from the Boutenko kids

  • 2 cups water
  • 1 head romaine lettuce
  • 1 small bunch parsley
  • 1/2 small pineapple
  • 1 banana
  • 1 pear

Blend in a blender until smooth. Serves 2.

Generic Green Smoothie

  • 2 cups water
  • 1/2 bunch curly kale
  • 2 medium apples
  • 1 banana

Blend until smooth. Serves 2.

Linda's Notes: If you are just starting out, add more water so these aren't so thick. If your blender is strong enough to chop ice, it should blend up your greens well. Make sure you wash and de-stem the kale as that can be hard to blend if you don't have a powerful blender. If you are blending these up for yourself, blend the pitcher and take it with you to work. Sip on this throughout the morning. Once you start adding these to your diet, you'll begin to feel very good, very quickly. You can add things like VitaMineral green for added greens and probiotics to your smoothies.  If starting out with kale seems a bit much to you, start out using salad greens, romaine or butter lettuce. Then work your way into greener greens. Try putting broccoli in your green smoothie. Try fresh mint or dill from your garden. Try celery! Throw in a shot of wheatgrass for added health benefits! (I do this because I don't always like the taste of straight wheatgrass - so I put it in the smoothie as a sweet chaser!) :-) Begin making up your own green smoothie recipes! Use the berries from your garden. Use peaches or plums. Use pears or apples. Use frozen bananas instead of fresh to really make it thick, creamy and icy cold. WARNING: people in your office will gawk at you when you have green smoothies! So bring enough to share! If they can get past the color, they will love the taste!

OK, I'm outta here. Enjoy your week and start adding some raw food to replace something less-than-stellar in your diet today!

Hearts and hugs,
Linda

P.S. Need some bulk food items? Well, send me an email or check out what I have on my products page! I have more than what is listed. My friend told me I'm like a chinese market here. COOL! I love it! I'll add more to the site. I just need to find another me to do some work so I can do other stuff... :-D
