Hello Good People!
Well, there's been many signs of spring for us here in Montpelier. First, when the coop starts selling the garden starts outside, it gives me hope! Then we have many celebrations and festivals around here that pop up like the "All Species Day" which was yesterday: Great great spring celebration. The other sign for me was a change in smoothies. This past winter, we were doing quite a hearty smoothie with lots of things in it like hemp protein, bee pollen and vitamineral green and it seemed to really keep us bubbly and on our toes during the colder weather. The past couple weeks, however, I was noticing that I wasn't really diggin' that smoothie and I wondered if Matt was liking it. He too was saying it was feeling very heavy and he wasn't feeling great an hour after drinking it. So I thought maybe our bodies are looking to go a bit easier on the superfoods with the change in season and our stomachs are very happy once again. I'm including the two smoothies I've been making so you can also have the recipes for your own use. • the Sprouted Grain Bread workshop is tonight at Hunger Mountain Coop from 6-7 pm.
I think it's another full workshop which is really really cool. We're going to be talking about sprouting AND dehydrating so if you can't make this workshop, we'll do it again. I've been getting some questions about sprouting lately - 'tis the season!
• Mystery Boxes abound! Want to have some raw food made for you and delivered to your door? Here's how it works: You order a $25, $50 or $75 box and I ship out wonderful raw goodies and treats to you! It's wonderfully easy. This gives me a lot more flexibility to send things that I don't necessarily have in the stores and you get wonderful surprises that can last for weeks. • Nut milk/Sprouting bags. We are starting to have HEMP bags as a more sustainable option for those who don't want to use man-made nylon material. Yippeeeee!!! SMOOTHIE TIPS:
1) Chew your smoothies! They are thick and have lots of good fiber in them. As you know, digestion begins in the mouth so slow down, don't gulp your smoothies and instead chew them up! It might be weird in the beginning but do it anyway. You'll find that you'll feel fuller longer because you'll be drinking more slowly.
2) Give your kids green smoothies! It's possible I'll do another green smoothie workshop in the future since there were many people who couldn't attend the full one last month. But I understand that lots of parents are trying to get their kids to eat more veggies. Disguising them in fruit smoothies is the way to go! The ratio is 60% fruit, 40% greens. The kids will taste the sweet fruit and will want more. They will then develop the taste for greens and will gravitate more towards salads and fresh KALE. 3) The above is also true for your husbands and parents and in-laws! :-) I'll be posting my favorite smoothie recipes up soon so you can have a quick reference for kid/husband-tested recipes. (I'm very thankful that my husband is from CA where smoothies are a prerequisite for living!) :-) 4) If you are using bananas for your smoothies, they are supposed to have brown dots on the peels. This is what ripe bananas look like. And while it isn't required for making smoothies, ripe bananas are sweeter and better tasting when making smoothies, puddings and other sweeties. If the peels are very yellow, the bananas are usually firmer and are more starchy in taste. If they ripen very quickly, peel them and freeze them. They will be perfect for making summer smoothies and ice creams. SOME INTERESTING ARTICLES FOR YOU TO READ • this came in last week: good news! Bottle makers say they will stop using BPAs in the manufacturing of polycarbonate water and infant bottles! (This is a NY Times article which will ask you to log in to read. Sorry! Here's another place you can read about it
• this is more about BPA (Bisphenol A) - it's a "clean sheet" so it gives you tips and alternatives for limiting your possible exposure...
• more on the skincare issue: This is testing done on natural and organic products and this is a database where you can search a product, ingredient or company Moral of the story always seems to point to eating more local, fresh foods, using glass bottles to hold your own filtered water and making/using your own natural products to feed your hair and skin. There were lots more articles that came in this week on sludge and fertilizer but we'll save that for another time. now for the raw recipe this week Two this week: Pink Smoothie This is a great smoothie with or without the tahini. by Linda Wooliever
Fill VitaMix pitcher with the first 6 ingredients and add enough filtered water to reach the 6 or 7 cup mark. Blend on low and switch to high for a few seconds. Pour into your favorite glasses and enjoy! serves 4-6
Fill VitaMix pitcher with the first 6 ingredients and add enough filtered water to reach the 6 or 7 cup mark. Blend on low and switch to high for a few seconds. Pour into your favorite glasses and enjoy! CLEAN UP TIP: Clean up is easy in the VitaMix. Just add water back into the pitcher and run the machine for a few seconds. The harder to clean stuff will clean up easily. You can rinse again if you want and then put in dish drainer to dry. If you'd like, you can add a tiny drop of dish detergent in the water and run the machine to clean it up. Easy peasy lemon squeezy.
Enjoy the sunshine,Linda
